The official relegion on the island of Crete is Greek Orthodox and much of the culture ( including holidays, ceremonies and traditions ) revolves around the orthodox religion. [ View the Orthodox Calender ]The saints are celebrated extensively and most saints have their own holidays that are commemorated with parades, festivities and ceremonies. Greek Orthodox churches are very ornate and decorated with icons, religious paintings and gold details. Traditionally, the orthodox church was very formal but the regulations for dress and practice have become less strict in recent days. Nevertheless, it is important to know the cultural and social expectations when visiting an orthodox church. Both men and women should dress conservatively. Some churches require that women be dressed in long dresses and with a head covering such as a decorative scarf or shaw. Masses at Greek Orthodox churches will be conducted in Greek and be largely based on ceremony. Greek Orthodox is not the only religion present in Crete. Mosques and minarets left over from Arab occupation are frequent in Crete allthough most of these no longer function in the traditional manner. There are some Muslim houses of worship, however, as well as Protestant Christian churches and meeting houses. |
