Cretan olive oil is some of the best in the world and is made locally by many farmers and families. Most Cretans have family connections to an olive grove, whether they own their own or have friends that do. From these olive groves, Cretans make their own extra virgin olive oil, and this oil is a staple in the Cretan diet. Served with almost everything at every meal, the olive oil in Crete is of superb flavor and quality. Cretan olive oil is often exported to Italy and then bottled and sold all over the world as Italian olive oil. However, the virgin olive oil made here is of much higher quality than most of the olive oil produced in Italy.
