The second largest city on the island of Crete, Chania has a population of about 60 thousand people and is the capital of the region of Chania. The furthest West of all the large cities, Chania is a popular tourist destination. With a few good beaches on the outskirts of town, most tourists visit Chania for the architecture and the culture it provides as well as its convenience. Chania is located only 15 minutes (by taxi) from the CHQ airport. In the center of town, is a large open-air market and many well appropriated shops. Rethymno is the capital of the region of Rethymno and is located on the Northern part of the region. Easily accessable from either of its neighboring regions, Rethymno is also a popular tourist destination. The City of Heraklion [ also known as Iraklion or Iraklio ] is the largest city on Crete and is the capital of the region by the same name. Heraklion is the most modern of the towns and cities on Crete and is also the busiest due to its population size.
