| Arkadi Monastery | |
| The Arkadi Monastery is the most famous and significant monastery in the prefecture of Rethymno and in the entire Crete. Its great fame is due to a historical event that occurred in 1866 when the Turks sent thousands of soldiers for insurrection of the island; when they were told about the venue of the oppressors, hundreds of men, children and women found refuge in the monastery; but this didn’t stopped the Turks attacked the monastery. To escape to be killed by the conquerors and surrender to them, the Cretan set fire to a store of gunpowder and the whole building exploded killing Cretan and Turks. Since this event the Arkadi Monastery has become a symbol of defiance against those who try to subdue the Cretan people and a proof of their patriotism. | |
