The Prefecture of Chania: Hania, Xania
The western-most prefecture in Crete is that of Chania (also known as Hania and Xania). Chania has many popular resort towns such as Platanias and Kalives as well as the mountain retreat of Omalos. The largest town in the region shares its name with the prefecture--Chania. In the town of Chania, there are many cultural gems and beautiful sites such as the Old Harbor of Chania and the Naval Museum and forts. You can also find areas of cultural siginificance in Paleohora (in southern Chania). Not far from the town of Chania, on the Akritori Penninsula is the Chania airport (Airport Code: CHQ )--one of the two major airports on the island.
