Monastery of Hryssoskalitissa

Located in the southwestern part of Kissamos ( 73 km from Chania), this monastery is named Hryssoskalitissa or the "Golden Stair". This name derives from the tradition that the last stair of the 98 steps leading to the monastery was made of gold. According to the tradition, only faithful people could see the gold step. However, it is also said that the Patriarchy in Constantinople gave the gold step to the Ottoman sultan in order to achieve better treatment for the Christians.

The Village of Fragokastello
One of the most beautiful Venetian fortresses on Crete, Fragokastello, was built in 1371. It is located approximately 170 km from Heraklion, 70 km from Rethymnon, and 70 km from Chania. This fortress is wonderfully preserved.
