Beaches in Chania are a popular destination for tourists. Whether you are looking for picturesque rocky coves or sandy stretches of coast, you can find the beach of your dreams in Chania.
A. Kalami / Kalyves  
  Located near the town of Kalyves, these beaches are wave-protected by the Souda bay. Bars and restaurants can be found just off the beach.
B. Marathi  
  Located on the Southern Side of the Akritori Peninsula. This small beach features shallow waters with mostly sand. This is a good beach to choose when there is large surf on the other beaches. There are some good facilities including Greek tavernas and restaurants.
C. Stavros  
  Located at the village by the same name, Stavros beach is a horseshoe-shapped lagoon with sandy beaches. Stavros boasts beautiful views of a small mountain on which slopes, scenes from the Anthony Quinn film, Zorba were taped.
D. Nea Chora  
  This is the closest beach for the residents of the town of Chania and is situated adjoining a neighborhood with the same name. Along the coastal road are plenty of good fish restaurants.
E. Chryssi Akti  
  Situated approximately 2 km West of the town of Chania, is the beach Chryssi Akti, also known as "Golden Beach". Chryssi Akiti is a small stretch of coast composed of three small beaches with yellow sand. There are beach services available on the beach.
F. Agii Apostoli  
  Adjacent to Chryssi Akti are the small bay beaches of Agii Apostoli--a popular area for the Chania town people for recreation and swimming. Close to the beaches are park areas and walking trails. Here you can see people swim all year around.
G. Kalamaki  
  A small stretch of beach popular with young people visiting the bars and driving their motorbikes. This beach progresses East-to-West from sandy beach to rocky cliffs.
H. Kato Stalos / Platanias  
  The beach stretch that continues to the village of Gerani begins in the village of Stalos. This is the biggest sandy beach on the Northern coast of West Crete. Some parts of the beach are dotted with pebbles and some rocks, but most of the beach is sand. This is the beach where most of the tourists visit and stay.
I. Afrata  
  A small bay beach that is mostly rocky or with pebbles and stones, this beach is a good place for snorkling and scuba. This is one of the few places where the diving clubs have permission to certify.
J.Gramvousa / Balito  
  Until recently, Balito was a secluded paradise that was unreachable except by strenuous walk or long boat ride. This beautiful lagoon with its emerald waters and white sands frequently has very warm water. Now it is accessable by a dirt road and several regular boats that ferry people during the tourist season. These boats stop by the island of Gramvousa where a Venetian fortress that was also used by pirates remains.
K. Falassarna  
  One of the best beaches in Crete, Falassarna is situated to the west of the village of Platanos and is a favorite destination of tourists and locals. This 3 km long beach of soft sand is sparcely populated. Falassarna is renowned as having some of the clearest waters in Greece.
L. Elafonissi  
  Between the small island of Elafonissi and mainland Crete is the famous lagoon beach with the same name. Long stretches of white sands with a pinkish-layer on top consisting of certain shells has given this lagoon the nickname "The Maldives of Crete". The mainland beaches are fully seviced with taverns, beach chairs and other tourist accomodations. However, if you desire a more secluded stay at the beach, it may be preferable to walk across the knee-level lagoon and stay on the island where there is no tourist commerce.
M. Paleochora  
  The village of Paleochora is situated on a small penninsula. On the western side of the village is the nice, sandy beach by the same name. This beach is also popular to windsurfers since the wind conditions are considered to be favorable for this sport at this location. There are several good tavernas near the beach for beach-goers.
N. Sougia  
  Near the small village of Sougia is the pebbly beach with the same name. Traditionally popular with backpackers, nudists and others who wish to be away from the tourist commerce, this village and beach can offer some seclusion.
O. Chora Sfakion  
  A small beach close to the Chora Sfakion village--the famous place for all Cretan insurgence. This is also the place where all the Samaria Gorge walkers stop after their boat trip from Agia Roumeli.
P. Frangokastello  
Frangokastello On this beach, you can swim with the famous Venetian fortress of Frangokastello as your backdrop. The fortress is in a very good state and is a nice to explore when you would like a break from swimming. In springtime, standing by the fortress looking out toward the Libyan Sea, you can see in the sky a phenomena called the "Riders of Sahara".
Q. Georgioupoli  
  The long sandy beach of Georgioupoli named after the village of the same name is a beautifully located at the Northern Coast of Eastern Chania. Among traditional ways of using the beach is also the possiblity to go horse riding in afternoon or early morning. You can ride at highspeed for several kilometers along the shoreline.
